A powerful, cinematic novel that sweeps from Ireland to America and back again

“…a richly textured novel, written with passion and style; an absolute delight ”

Fiona Clarke, an Irish writer living in New York, has been running away from her past since she left rural Cregora, Ireland, for boarding school. That past finds her, many years later, when her thinly veiled autobiographical novel is optioned for a movie. As consultant to the film, Fiona unearths deep secrets, relives childhood trauma, and connects with an estranged family unexpectedly thrust back into her life. History opens upon her, and Fiona is forced to stop running and confront a secret shame.
Ranging from Manhattan to Hollywood to rural Ireland, Fiona is a stunning tale of a creative woman’s life transformed by loss.

“Gemma Whelan’s Fiona is amazing. It’s a story of an Irish writer living in America who is collaborating on a film script of her own life which forces her to confront the lies and deceptions of her past, lies that have poisoned her relationships and walled up her creativity.

This is a richly textured novel, written with passion and style; an absolute delight to read.”

"Fiona is the captivating odyssey of a writer who, seeking fulfillment in Manhattan and Hollywood, is drawn back inexorably to face her roots in rural Ireland.

Beautifully written, populated with memorable characters, possessed of a page-turning plot, the novel unspools in the imagination like a rich and wonderful film – and resonates afterward in the heart.”

Fiona Stolen Child eBook Gemma Whelan

FIONA by Gemma Whelan is the perfect book to read when you want to slow down and experience more! The story follows Fiona, an Irish born writer hired as a consultant, on the film adaptation of a novel secretly based on her own life. Whelan expertly places us into Fiona's writers eye; a place where the simple act of brewing a cup of tea is a familial sensory explosion. I don't drink tea, but I actually wanted a cup! This wonderful sensory world (we go literally around the globe and in/out of child/adult experiences) is then slowly dissected as "the film" pushes Fiona to re-examine how her heightened child hood "sensory" perception may have blurred the lines of fact with fiction. It is delightful

Fiona Stolen Child eBook Gemma Whelan Reviews

Gemma Whelan's first novel is both a lovely, engaging read and a courageous exploration of the isolation created by shame and childhood wounds.

As too many children do, the book's main character, Fiona, takes on more responsibility for the events around her than any child can handle - unbeknownst to the overwhelmed adults around her and much to her own detriment as she grows to adulthood. The primary movement in the novel comes from the way circumstances press Fiona to deal with these wounds from her past. Of course, from Fiona's perspective she is being pushed to relive her worst failures as a human being, but when she musters the courage to do so she discovers how fluid every story is and indeed how much she had filtered in her self-accusing account of the past.

Whelan's descriptions of Fiona's interior world are honest and moving, especially as she unfolds the self-imposed limits and quirks that so unconsciously but naturally reflect Fiona's burdens from childhood. I especially appreciated the way the author portrayed the possibility of multiple versions of a story, or of who is responsible, without sidestepping the fact that people can and do prey on the weak and the young, causing untold harm.

I also thoroughly appreciated the way Whelan taps into the American love affair with images of Irish culture, while introducing subtleties and color that make the reality more vivid and less idealized.

I found Fiona very engaging and easy to read. I give it 4 stars because, though the plot is artfully developed, there are places that are a bit over-described and some of the dialogue, particularly with children or Fiona's love interest, feels slightly idealized and self-conscious. I am sure the next novel (and the next after that!) will balance these elements more gracefully.

Thank you for an enjoyable read and a valuable window into one woman's personal journey back to life!
Like many others, I have memories of my childhood that are skewed due to personal guilt - maybe a lie gone too far, or something misunderstood that caused me to lash out in anger. I also have memories of being hurt, memories that have been refuted by those who did the "hurt" to me. A simple chat, a re-hashing of those times is enough to clear away the fog and, possibly, set things a little more straight in my current life.

And that is what this book is ultimately about. Yes, there's family relationship drama, there's horrifying circumstances, there's guilt, there's hurt, there's anger, and there's love, hope, healing and joy. Told as a story within a story, Gemma Whelan takes Fiona and slowly opens her up to the reader, allowing us bits and pieces of her story through her own fictional book and through her actions in "real life".

I thought this book was beautiful. I wept for Fiona and her family, I struggled with them as they looked to make certain decisions and I found bittersweet vindication along-side Fiona and her family.

I've never been to Ireland, and I can't say that I've known any of Irish well, personally - but this book personifies what I love so much about Irish authors. It held so much emotion, packed into a story that kept me gripped from start until finished, but I never felt frantic or hurried to get to the end. Instead, I enjoyed the journey there and the emotional turmoil that it caused, because that's why I read - to have my emotions woken up and stirred, because that makes me feel even more alive.
This novel takes place in New York City and Ireland and it is about a woman who has written a novel that is similar to her own past. She works closely with the man writing the movie script of her novel. As they work together to get the script ready for production, Fiona is forced to confront her demons of her past, her sister had died at an early age and she was estranged from her brother. She had left Ireland hoping never to go back but the producers agreed that the movie should be as authentic as possible and the movie should be filmed at their childhood home. Her father has recently passed away and her and her brother need to come to an agreement as to what to do with the house, do they sell or keep. With all these issues going on she becomes very close to a man who can help her through her issues. I really enjoyed reading this book, a wonderful story about love, loss, redemption and forgiveness.
This was a lovely story of a woman
coming to terms with her past and
family and moving toward new
strength and reconciliation.
You'll love FIONA. The storytelling of this novel within a novel, makes the book a page-turner. Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. It was a delightful addiction. When I got to the last page, I bought another copy as a Christmas gift for a friend.
"Fiona" is brilliant, I couldn't put it down. Beautifully written, I could visualize every moment and feel the essence of every character. I cried, laughed and enjoyed every single page! I look forward to reading the next novel by a most talented author, Gemma Whelan. Bravo!
